Say all you want about the importance of a tightly arranged song, meticulous beats, quality producing and technical fortitude; give me a 4/4 guitar riff with a sing-able song about girls and my night’s made.  That’s why I first dug MxPx nearly a decade ago and why I was riddled with excitement to see Mike Hererra’s solo show and talk to him.

There are other elements that keep my love for MxPx alive; namely, my profound respect for the musicians who have churned out original stuff since mid-teens and have remained friends, collaborators and positively engaging to fans.

It’s been almost 20 years since Mike, Tom and Yuri kick started their musical careers and, today, Mike’s at the forefront touring solo, with his alt-country trio Tumbledown, with the rejuvenated version of Arthur and with MxPx.

Sinizine.net had the privilege of sitting down with Mike in the green room at Exit/In (right before which, he snapped this photo http://twitpic.com/4whn1t) before he performed his solo material (all stripped down variations of classic MxPx tunes, Tumbledown arrangements and a few covers) to discuss his disparate musical path, the next MxPx album, the solo tour, hand tattoos and much more.
