Chronicling the Bruise Cruise Festival
by Rebecca Seung on Mar 04th, 2011
Fresh off the ship and caked with salt from the sea, our own mobile music journalist, Rebecca Seung brought home news of the sea-bound rock ‘n’ roll world known as the Bruise Cruise Festival:
The festival started Thursday night with a pre-party show in Miami before embarking on the Carnival Cruise Liner “Imagination” for a three-day voyage to the Bahamas. Nashville native Jonas Stein, frontman for the garage rock band Turbo Fruits who also played the fest, and booking partner Michelle Cable of Panache Booking were the orchestrators on what has got to be one of the biggest undertakings in modern music. I mean, think about putting 400 musicians, fans, and press on a boat with free food, lots of alcohol, and nothing to do but party, and you’re only scratching the surface of this one-of-a-kind experience.
Other bands performing were the always unpredictable Black Lips, the surfy psychedelic San Fran staple Thee Oh Sees, Austin’s twangy The Strange Boys, the unlikely duo of organist Quintron and puppeteer Miss Pussycat, and other up-and-coming indie bands like Vivian Girls, Surfer Blood, Ty Segall, and Jacuzzi Boys.
