Sinizine.net‘s interview with Jimmy Eat World

A decade after Arizona’s Jimmy Eat World’s first big single “The Middle” was released, our favorite emo band is all grown up, but not giving up.  And why should they?  On the cusp of their latest LP release Invented last September, Jimmy Eat World played to a sold out show Friday night at the Cannery Ballroom.

The band’s tumultuous relationships in and out of major labels has not affected their ability to make records that evolve over time.  From 1999’s Clarity to their latest release, these guys have grown and adapted to changes in the music industry and their sound is proof positive of that change.

From note one of Friday’s performance here in Nashville, the crowd was engaged and embedded themselves as part of the performance.  From the angst-ridden tunes of Clarity to the more grown up grievances portrayed in Invented, the band played a mix of tunes that chronicled their journey thus far.  Everyone watching seemed to be right with them for the ride as they danced and sang along at nearly every stop on the musical walk down memory lane, and not just the ones from that one record that had that one single that one time.

A lesson in longevity and truth towards self, Jimmy Eat World’s show affirms the positive merits of the way the business has changed since the band began to release EPs in 1994.   Maybe, just maybe, it’s possible to make it in this game with a little bit of intuition, hard work and unadulterated love for making music.  Even the emo/rock kids of the turn of the century can be successful long after MTV stopped playing those music video things.  Nashville agrees.
